Theology
Seraphim are a type of celestial
or heavenly being in Christianity and Judaism. Typically Seraphim are the
plural form of Seraph, but most still refer to them as Seraphim. What we know
of them most sparks from the Christian Theology of Angels, where they are seen
as the first on the first choir of hierarchy of angels. That is out of Three
choirs and nine ranks, making them seen as the most powerful angels. They are
closest to God’s throne and are whom speak to God directly.

Depending on the literature and
religion, that comes in many different forms. In Christianity, they are beings
of pure light, resonating with the “Fire Of Love,” angels of love, light and
fire. In their angelic form, they appear as human beings with four heads, six
wings and are encircled by flames. As they surround the Throne of Glory, they
sing the Trisagion, “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

In the “Book of Revelation,” the
seraphim are said to forever be in the presence of God and are always praising
him. Quote, “Day and night without ceasing they sing: Holy, Holy, Holy is the
Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.”

Within a few parts of the bible,
notably in the “Numbers and Deuteronomy,” they are said to be serpents due to
the connotation of burning pains with the serpent’s poisonous bite. And within
the Christian Gnostic text, “On the Origin of the World,” they are celestial
beings that take the form of a dragon.

Jewish
In the Jewish Angelic hierarchy,
Seraphim are in the fifth rank out of ten. And in some texts namely the Book of
Enoch, they appear in two different forms. In the 2nd-century BC
version of the Book of Enoch, they are mentioned with conjunction with
Cherubim, standing nearest to the throne of God. Within this version of the
book they are also called, the Ikisat: which means serpent, dragons and even an
alternating term for Hell.

In the Book of Isaiah, Chapter
6, Isaiah speaks of a vision he had that quotes, “I saw the Lord sitting upon a
throne, high and lifted up; and His train filled the Hekhal (sanctuary). Above
him stood the Seraphim; each had six wings; with two he covered his face, and
two he covered his feet and with two he flew.” He also describes them crying
out, “Holy, holy holy, the whole earth is full of His glory.”

They are described as “The
Burning Ones,” and are said to have a fiery passion for doing God’s work.

Godly Connections?:
There are some views that
mention a connection with the Seraphim with the Babylonian God known as Nergal,
the God of Fire. I couldn’t find much on a connection between a Seraphim and
Nergal; Nergal usually is seen as a lion in some way, a God of War, Fire, the
Desert and the underworld, depending on the aspect of him. The only thing I can
see as a connection is the fire part.

Another connection that is
seemingly made is of the Egyptian Griffins which are placed at Beni-Hassan as
guardians of the graves. They are portrayed with six wings than your average
griffin that has two. I may be wrong but when I was looking over the pictures
of these guardians I still only found two wings – but I also don’t know how to
read hieroglyphs, and it could be mentioned they have six wings. I couldn’t
find anything else that relates them to the Seraphim.

Today:
Some religions,
such as the modern Orthodox Judaism still believe in the Seraphim, speak of
them, and write of them, mentioning them. Several Catholic schools use a Seraph
or related symbols as their mascot. Even the Kingswood College in Randles Hill,
and a public school in Sri Lanka, claims the Seraph as its mascot. However,
they do not appear in the New Testament. The most notable Seraphim are:
Seraphiel, Jehoel, Metatron, Michael, and Satan, prior to his fall.
