Evening Everyone and Welcome to Between Monsters and Men, today we will be
researching the Bell Witch Haunting.
Let me begin by saying that this
will be a two part video. I’ve dived as deep as I can without actually driving
to Tennessee to grab documents and videos myself, though it would be a dream.
I’d also like to mention that I highly believe in spirits and the power of
names; so before continuing I’d like to give respect to the Bell Witch spirit
in allowing me to research its haunting and please don’t haunt me.

Now, let’s begin.
The Bell Witch Haunting spans
for 200 years and still continues on today. Due to the severity, eyewitnesses,
and how the spirit now haunts not just the land the original Bells farm land
was on but the Cave nearby and the headstones of the families touched by the
evil, this Haunting has been and will always be the most known American Ghost
Story with the only known record where a person has died from a or by a spirit.

Bell Family
It was 1805 when John Bell
brought his family from North Carolina to what is now Adams, Tennessee. Once in
Adams, the family became successful farmers, popped out three more children and
even grew his holdings to 328 acres of land which he cleared and made into a
number of fields for planting. With the rise of his success, the more
intertwined they became with their community, and soon John Bell became the
Elder of the Red River Baptist Church.

Elder of the Red River Baptist Church.
Events:
The events begin
with a very strange encounter. In late summer of 1817, John Bell was in his
corn fields when he came across a strange looking animal sitting in the middle
of a corn row. What shocked him wasn’t the fact the animal sat so still,
unbothered by the approach of human but the appearance: the animal had the body
of a dog and the head of a rabbit. Shocked, John Bell shot at the animal
several times with his gun but instead of hitting the target, the animal
vanished before his eyes.

It was that
night when the noises started just outside the family’s log cabin. It was first
scratching, and then knocking, turning into odd sounds of lips smacking – so
loud it can be heard from the inside to the point of even waking the family.
The eldest sons and John rushed outside to catch the culprit, human or animal,
but nothing was there. Nights passed, the sounds increased and eventually came
inside. The sound of shuffling and gnawing could be heard, like that of rats
chewing on bed posts. Again, they searched, but came up empty handed.

A couple of
weeks after this, the sounds became physical.

One night,
while asleep, the children’s’ blankets and pillows were pulled from them and
tossed across the room by an invisible entity. Then, hair pulling, scratching,
smacking, pinching and punching became a regular.

Betsy, the
Bell’s youngest daughter out of nine, experienced the worst treatment. The
entity would pull her hair the most; slap her hardest, leaving welts and
handprints all over her face and body. Afraid for her, the family sent her to a
neighbor to escape the treatment but the activity would only follow. On one
occasion, it was said that the family gave Betsy medicine to vomit, for reasons
I couldn’t find of course, and when she threw up, brass pins and needles came
out.

As time went
on, the entity was able to build up a vocals, first starting off as whispering
voices which were too week for anyone to distinguish into words but what
sounded like an old woman singing hymns. Over time, it was able to strengthen
its voice to the point it was loud and unmistakable. It sang hymns, quoted scripture,
carried on intelligent conversations and once even quoted word for words, two
sermons that were being preached at the same time on the same day, thirteen
miles apart. How this was proven is beyond me since phones weren’t a thing back
then? But if this is true, that means the entity had the ability to multiply
itself or there were multiple spirits working off each other. One of the
spirit’s first understandable statements was, “I am a spirit who was once
happy. But I have been disturbed and am now unhappy.”

When asked
for more details on whom or what the spirit is, the spirits first reply was
that it was a Native American who had been buried on the site of the house. The
Bell Farm and Cave were and are sitting on Native Americans mounds, where their
dead were buried.

John Bell and
Betsy were not the only ones who would be pestered by the spirit; sometimes the
voice of the ghost would follow a young slave named Anky, who helped Lucy Bell
around the house with tasks, such as washing and cleaning. The voice would make
awful comments that would be classified today as racist.

There were
also apparently multiple voices: one that was of a gruff male named Blackdog,
another, young boy’s voices named Jerusalem, and a woman’s voice named
Mathematics. But I found this in a book that didn’t provide much accurate
information; it also claimed Kate Batts was African American when she was
actually of White and Native descent. So I can’t hold too much to that
information but I do believe personally there were multiple spirits.

Finally after
the physical abuse from the entity became too much to handle on their own, John
Bell, whom had his family keep the activity a secret, went to the town and his
friends for help, sharing his families experiences with them. He asked his
closest friend and neighbor, James Johnston to come over and stay the night.
James and his wife stayed at the Bell home and were subjected to the same
events as the Bells’; after having their bedcovers removed and being slapped
repeatedly, James sprang out of bed and shouted, “In the name of the Lord, who
are you and what do you want!”

There was no

Word spread
about this powerful entity, catching the ear near and far and even reaching
General Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States; whom John
Bell Jr, Drewry Bell and Jesse Bell, the three eldest sons of the Bell family,
had all fought under in the Battle of New Orleans. It was 1819 when Andrew Jackson came to visit
the Bell Farm. With him, a group of several men, horses and a wagon followed,
and as they approached the Bell property the wagon came to a halt and the
horses would no longer pull any further.

After several
minutes of trying to coax the horses onward and failing, Jackson proclaimed,
“By the eternal, boys! That must be the Bell Witch!” As if summoned, a female
voice told Jackson they could continue onto the property and that she would see
them again. Only then were they able to move on.

At the house,
Jackson and John Bell spoke about the Indians and other topics, while they
waited to see if the entity would keep to her word but after several hours of
silence, a man part of Jackson’s group, who claimed to be a witch tamer, pulled
out a pistol and said he will shoot a silver bullet that can kill any evil
spirit that it came into contact with. He also said that the reason why the
spirit had done nothing thus far was that it feared his silver bullet.
Immediately, the man’s body started to jerk in all directions, he screamed,
complaining that he was being stuck with pins and beaten severely. He was
dragged to the front door and thrown out by the spirit.

Angry, the

would be tormented the following evening. Now officially terrified, the rest of
the men begged their General to leave the farm but Jackson insisted on staying,
wanting to identify this other ‘fraud.’

The events
after aren’t clear, but the next morning, Jackson and his men were spotted
nearby Springfield, presumably heading back to Nashville. Later on, the General
was heard saying, “I’d rather face the entire British army, than spend another
night with the Bell Witch.”

There are a
couple of other instances where people came to the Bell farm to do their own
type of investigations. At one time, John Johnston, the son of James Johnston,
the neighbor who first visited after the activity, came over to ask the spirit
a question that no one outside of his family would have known. He asked, what
would his Dutch Step-grandmother in North Carolina would say to her slaves if
she thought they did something wrong. The spirit replied in the grandmother’s
accent, “Hut, Tut, what has happened now?”

At another
point in time, an Englishman visited and he remarked about his family overseas,
just as John Johnston did, and again, the spirit mimicked his English parents.
Early the next morning, the spirit woke him with the sound of his parents’
worried voices, which also worried him. The Englishman left and later wrote to
the Bell family that the spirit had visited his family in England.

Outside of
the house, a hundred yards away, there was a thicket of trees and bushes, and
as the children walked past on their way to and from school, they’d be struck
by flying sticks. Betsy, whom only had stones thrown at her, was struck harsher
than the rest of the children who were either missed when the sticks were
thrown or barely touched when hit. Young Joel Bell took to throwing the sticks
back, at which they returned to them with increased force. They thought there
had to be someone in the bushes, but when the thicket was searched; there was
no sign of life.

In 1820,
Betsy Bell got engaged to a young man who lived not far from her, named Joshua
Gardner. For some unknown reason, the entity disliked Joshua and would
repeatedly tell Betsy not to marry him. When she wouldn’t listen, the spirit
would follow them, pestering them everywhere they went, but the spirit wasn’t
the only one who was disappointed at this engagement. Richard Powell, Betsy and
Joshua’s former schoolteacher, had a noticeably interest in Betsy for some
time. He too, wanted to marry her when she became older. Richard Powell was
eleven years Betsy’s senior and was a student of the occult, though this
knowledge was never proven. After a long while of taunting, their relationship
grew strenuous and they ended their engagement on Easter Monday of 1821.

John Bell was
the main victim. He experienced episodes of twitching in his face, difficulty
swallowing, his throat closing up or stretching out as if a stick was being
lodged inside. By fall of 1820, his health had declined to the point he was
confined to his house, where the spirit had easier access to pester him.
Whenever he tried to get up or walk, the spirit would remove his shoes and it
would slap his face whenever he was experiencing seizures. Throughout the
entire farm, the spirit’s voice could be heard cursing and chastising John
Bell.

John Bell
passed away on December 20th, 1820. After his death, the family
found a small vial of unidentified liquid in the cupboard. Wanting to test this
liquid, John Bell, Jr, gave the rest of the bottle, which was about half, to
the family cat. The cat died instantly. It is now believed, when an
investigator asked a chemist what the liquid could have been now a day. She
stated it was most likely arsenic. Which was easily attainable back then to
poison rats.

The spirit
then spoke, “I have ol’ Jack a big dose of that last night, which fixed him!”
Outraged, John Jr, threw the vial into the fireplace, where it burst into a
bright blue flame and shot up into the chimney. John Bell’s funeral was one of
the largest held in Robertson County, family and friends filled the graveyard
including one extra soul. The spirit laughed loudly and sang songs about brandy
and she didn’t stop singing until every last person left the graveyard. After
this, the spirit shows itself rarer than before.

-April 1821,
the spirit visited John Bell’s widow, Lucy Bell, and told her that it shall
return for a visit in seven years. And it did, in 1828, the spirit visited John
Bell, Jr, whom it discussed such things as the origin of life, civilization,
religion, and the need for a mass spiritual reawakening. What stuck out most of
the conversations were the spirit’s nearly accurate predictions of the Civil
War and other predictive events.

After three
weeks, the entity left, promising again that it would return to John Bell’s
direct descendant in 107 years. The year would have been 1935: the direct
descendant at the time was Nashville Physician, Dr. Charles Bailey Bell.

Witch Cave:
The
Bell Witch Cave is a cave that sits on the original land where the Bell Farm
was, which is also the mounds of Native American burials. Originally the Bell
family used it as a cold storage for their food but before even them, the
Natives were using it. Within the cave, people have found old grave stones,
including a stone coffin that was for a little Indian girl whose remains were
stolen and never found. She was said to have been dead for 300 to 400 years.

On
the show, “Cursed: The Bell Witch”, a Native American Shaman, named William
“Windwalker” Gibson, states that he believes there is one dominant spirit above
the rest within the cave. He also believes that it was this spirit that haunted
and possibly killed John Bell. However, it is not the typical spirit we’ve come
to know via the stories. But more on that in the second video where I’ll be
discussing all the theories.

was 1944, Bonnie Haneline, played hooky one day from her English class to go to

Owner. She had explored the cave many times with her friends before, and not
all was too frightful for her, except for this time.

While
inside, her lantern blew out despite no breeze. She relights the lantern and
again, it blew out. Now terrified, she crawled along the water path of the cave
in the dark until she reached the entrance where she found an opened can of
pork and beans and marshmallows. It was later that night she learned from law
enforcement that two escaped fugitives were hiding in the back of the cave at
the time she was in it. She credited the spirit with helping avoid them.

Curse and Hauntings Today
The severity of
the Bell Witch haunting ended 200 years ago, but there are still plenty of
unexplainable activities that occur on the land the farm resided on, the Bell
Cave and the grave stones of the family. The faint sounds of people talking,
children playing, and screaming can be heard; the sight of candle lights dancing
in the fields at night, mist, orbs of light, human-like figures and other
phenomena’s can be seen with the human eye and on camera. Even local animals
have a tendency of chasing people, such as cats and rabbits.

There is a

split in the Bell family, the Mississippi Bells and the Tennessee Bells.
The Mississippi Bells moved out of state due to the curse and the
legend; their curse revolving around the first born men dying in weird and
mysterious ways. Such as, a log landing and squishing a man to death, a man
suddenly going hermit and crazy, only later to be found having hung himself and
another who went to a Native American reservation out west for unknown reasons
and then died of a heart attack. He was also known for scribbling weird symbols
down claiming it was part of the curse and tattooing them onto his body.

On the
Tennessee side, the curse went on differently, less dangerously. The
Mississippi side was mostly direct descendants of Betsy and the Tennessee side
of Joel Bell. The Tennessee side almost refused to speak about the curse up
until a grandmother experienced something traumatizing in her house. She was
napping one, woke up to a loud sound, scared she called her son and grandson.
They came over and they all found that the cabinet holding the bone china,
which was also locked, was open and the bone china was on the ground displayed
but not broken. The cabinet was not fallen over since it was bolted to the
wall. Later on in the years they were going to auction off the house that this
happened in and when they were cleaning it out they found an old bible dated of
the year John Bell died, 1820. The bible belonged to Joel Bell and that is
where they believe the curse had stayed with them.
